Does Insurance Cover Acupuncture Treatments?

Two of the most frequently asked questions we get from our prospective patients are, "Does insurance cover acupuncture treatment?" and "Do you accept insurance as payment?"

The good news is, increasing number of  insurance companies are covering acupuncture nowadays comparing to a decade ago. If you have health insurance, you might be covered for acupuncture treatment benefits.  For some insurance companies that don't, they may have an Affinity Program in which you are eligible to participate. With Affinity programs, you are able to get acupuncture treatment at discounted rate with participating acupuncturists.

It is important to note that although many insurance companies offer acupuncture coverage, not all treatments are eligible for payment.  You will need to understand your insurance company's coverage for acupuncture services before visiting your acupuncturist.

To find out whether your insurance company provides acupuncture benefits for your needs,

and for how much are you covered, you can call your insurance company's patient information phone number listed on the back of your insurance card and ask the following questions:

  • Does the plan covers acupuncture services? If not, is there an available Affinity plan?
  • If the plan cover acupuncture treatments, what conditions are covered?
  • Is a referral from an MD needed to see an acupuncturist?
  • Who can provide the acupuncture treatment? A licensed acupuncturist? An MD?
  • Is there a limit in the number of acupuncture treatments per year?
  • Is there a deductible that must be met, and how much?
  • What percentage of the treatment fee does the insurance company pay?
  • Does the insurance cover visits to out of network acupuncturist? If yes, what is the difference in the insurance payment?
  • How much will the office visit co-pays be?
